JANUARY 28, 2011 ACTION
As you read this, the polls have closed in Sudan and millions of Southerners voted, with relatively little violent occurrences, to determine whether to form an independent nation. This referendum in South Sudan is the culmination of a 2005 peace agreement which ended a civil war that lasted over twenty years and took approximately two million lives. Just a couple of months ago, few thought this historic referendum could be held on time and in relative peace. While it is a monumental event for the people of Sudan, a successful vote is just the beginning.
At this pivotal moment, the U.S. must continue to build on our recent diplomacy so the contentious issues that remain between the North and South are peacefully resolved — but we must not forget that the people of Darfur in Sudan’s western region are still without peace.
The Action Team at American Jewish World Service notes that high-level engagement from the Obama administration was a key ingredient in the success we are currently witnessing in South Sudan. Activists like you held our government accountable to help prevent renewed conflict. Your help is needed once again.
Call on President Obama to continue his engagement to ensure peace in Sudan.
We have seen the fruits of our sustained advocacy that ensured Sudan would be a priority for the Obama administration. But the path is far from over. We must continue our work in the region until the people of Darfur can find peace.
